What exactly do Physios or PTs do?
Our physiotherapist in Mississauga are movement specialists and experts at rehab, working to restore function, reduce pain and prevent injuries through hands on treatments, exercises and education.
What type of training do physiotherapists have?
Physiotherapists are highly educated individuals, with an extensive training in anatomy, clinical sciences and rehabilitation. All of our PT’s are Registered Physiotherapists. They typically have an undergraduate degree in clinical sciences, kinesiology or a health-related field. Following their degree, they complete a Masters degree in Physiotherapy from an accredited program, which includes vigorous training both theoretically and clinically. While many also obtain post graduate courses, it is not necessary. In Ontario, physiotherapists are required to pass their board exams and register with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario to receive their physiotherapy practice license.
Do I need a referral to receive treatment from a physiotherapist?
No referral is needed! You are able to book directly with one of our team members and start your recovery process right away. The physiotherapist will perform their own initial assessment and provide a personalized treatment plan based on their findings.
What type of conditions do they treat?
Anywhere from simple falls, sports injuries, post-surgical rehab to arthritis and chronic pain. They can help with it all! Our therapists are able to treat a wide variety of conditions, ranging from muscular pain, joint pain, as well as systemic or neurological pain. Their assessment will allow them to determine the best type of treatment for you. Some of the most common conditions we see here in office are back pain, sprains or strains, fracture recovery or neuropathies. However, they can also assist with fall prevention, age related changes and chronic pain.
Am I going to be given homework after my treatment session?
In most cases, yes! Your physiotherapist will provide you a personalized exercise plan which will include some exercises and stretches to complete at home. This helps speed up recovery and prevent reinjury in between visits. The more that you put into your home exercises the quicker you will see results. Our physiotherapists are dedicated to making sure they provide you will movements that fit into your life, and that you enjoy doing.
How long is it going to take before I feel better after starting Physiotherapy?
This is one of the most common questions PTs get asked! The most important thing to remember is that your body takes time to heal, and treatment helps aid that process. You may feel better immediately after treatment, however the best way to speed up this process is continue with your home care, such as any exercises your therapist has provided for you. It helps when you allow yourself time to heal, and be patient with the process and keep your body moving in the meantime. Depending on your injury, return to activity plan, and pre-existing conditions, our physiotherapists will provide a rough timeline it can typically take for the body to heal.
Is there anything I can do if I run out of insurance?
Unfortunately, therapy can be expensive, and sometimes patients either don’t have insurance to have ongoing care or their benefits run out. In this case, your therapist will provide you with things that you can actively do at home to maintain your progress, such as exercises, nutrition, maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They may also be able to extend time between visits in order allow your body time to heal and then have a check-in with them as needed.
